What a drug court does

Drug courts combine substance-use treatment with court supervision. A program may involve hearings, treatment attendance, testing and other requirements. The participant's lawyer and the court explain the actual conditions; they differ between programs.

Drug court is not the same as a family treatment court. Family treatment courts address child-welfare matters; adult drug courts address criminal cases. Use the court's exact program name when asking questions.

Start with the defense lawyer and court

Ask the defense lawyer whether a treatment-court pathway can be considered. The court—not Patrick's Path or a family member—decides eligibility and participation terms. Do not assume that a diagnosis, treatment history or family request qualifies someone.

Questions to ask before agreeing

  • Which charges, residency rules and other requirements apply?
  • What hearings, appointments, testing and costs are required?
  • What happens if someone misses an appointment or cannot find transportation?
  • How are treatment changes or setbacks handled?
  • What information can be shared with family, and what consent is needed?
  • What are the possible legal outcomes of completing or leaving the program?

Offer practical support without taking over

With the participant's agreement, help organize transportation, appointment reminders or everyday needs. Ask which help they want. Do not send treatment records or sensitive details to Patrick's Path; communicate about case-specific information only through the lawyer, court or authorized care team.

Find reliable program information

Read the current participant handbook from the court and ask about anything unclear. A national map helps identify programs; it does not confirm admission or eligibility.

Helpfulness

No health information or case details. Opens a draft in your email app; nothing is saved here or sent until you send it. Not an emergency contact.
